US: Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has identified sponsored listings and other paid host services as potential sources of high-margin revenue as the company expands its business beyond accommodation.
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference, Chesky said Airbnb could introduce more services for hosts, drawing comparisons with the revenue generated from sellers by marketplaces such as Amazon, Alibaba and Etsy.
Sponsored listings, which would allow hosts or property managers to pay for greater visibility in search results, were described by Chesky as an “obvious” opportunity.
He said: “This is a pretty easy straight shot to $1 billion incremental high margin revenue.”
The estimate was based on the performance of similar products offered by other marketplaces and was not presented as formal financial guidance. Airbnb has not confirmed plans to launch sponsored listings or provided details about how such a product could operate.
The comments follow Vrbo’s global rollout of sponsored listings earlier in September. Its pay-per-booked-night advertising product places participating properties at the top of relevant search results.
Introducing a similar model would create another marketing channel for Airbnb hosts, although it could also increase the cost of competing for visibility in destinations with large volumes of accommodation.
Chesky said sponsored listings could form part of a wider portfolio of host services, which may also include products such as travel insurance.
Airbnb is also expanding its accommodation and travel categories through hotels, Services and Experiences. Chesky said category expansion and further international growth would support the company’s future revenue.
The company is developing a more visual and conversational artificial intelligence interface, although the product remains in a pilot stage. Chesky expects consumer adoption of AI to accelerate over the next 18 to 24 months as technology moves beyond text-based chatbots towards voice, images and video.
Airbnb has not provided a release date for the interface or confirmed which markets would receive it first.
