Investigation finds Airbnb and Booking.com listings in Bucharest earthquake-risk buildings

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Romania: More than 200 short-term rental properties are reportedly being advertised on Airbnb and Booking.com in Bucharest despite being located in buildings where holiday letting is prohibited because of severe earthquake risk.

An investigation by The Guardian, based on analysis from Romanian seismic risk organisation Re:Rise, identified 207 holiday rental listings operating in buildings classified as RS1, Romania’s highest seismic risk category. Together, the properties could accommodate more than 1,000 guests each night.

Romania banned both short and long-term rentals in RS1 buildings in 2024, with landlords who breach the rules facing fines of between €1,000 and €2,000.

Re:Rise said it had repeatedly raised concerns with both platforms. Airbnb said it was investigating the findings, while Booking.com said accommodation partners are responsible for complying with local laws and that authorities can report listings that may breach regulations.
