The Netherlands: Booking.com suffered a data breach, allowing “unauthorised parties” access customer details.
While no financial information was accessed, the platform said it “noticed some suspicious activity involving unauthorised third parties being able to access some of our guests’ booking information”.
Booking.com said based on its investigation, booking details and names, emails, addresses, phone numbers and other shared information may have been accessed. It said the issue has been contained and that guests’ reservation PIN numbers were changed.
Keven Knight, CEO of Talion said: “Given that Booking.com is the largest and most widely used travel agency site in the world, this could turn out to be a sizable attack.”
“Victims are still at risk of phishing, and these communications could be highly tailored given the attackers know about the previous holiday bookings.”
The number of accounts impacted by the breach has not yet been confirmed.
Highlights:
- Booking.com suffered a data breach allowing unauthorised parties to access customer booking details including names, emails, addresses and phone numbers, though financial information was not compromised.
- The company has reset affected reservation PIN numbers but declined to disclose the number of impacted accounts.
