Arizona Super Bowl sees rental bookings go through the roof

US: Ahead of Super Bowl LVII, the deciding American football championship game of the National Football League [NFL] for the 2022 season, bookings for short-term rentals in the Phoenix / Scottsdale area were through the roof for fans travelling for the big game, according to short-term rental data and analytics provider, AirDNA.

In Glendale, the average rate paid leading up to the weekend of the Super Bowl was around $740, compared to an average paid rate of $288 for the same dates last year. For last weekend [3-5 February], on the contrary, the average booked rate in Glendale was only $228.

The Super Bowl boosted a rapidly growing market in Phoenix, where demand and supply are both rising year over year. There were 1,081 rentals available at least one day in Q4 2022 in Glendale, up by 129 per cent from Q4 2021.

In Phoenix / Scottsdale as a whole, available listings were up 44 per cent over the same period.

Temporary short-term rentals popping up around a big event can also be a welcome addition to the lodging supply in a destination, taking pressure off the local hotels without leaving empty rooms after the event.

Average rates in the area have gone up 44.5 per cent from last year, a huge increase from a 12.1 per cent year-over-year increase the week before. The effect was largest in budget properties, where average rates are up 18.1 per cent from last year, versus 9.6 per cent in the week before, while luxury properties are seeing a $747 premium versus the week before.

This year’s Super Bowl saw the American Football Conference champion Kansas City Chiefs face off against the National Football Conference champion Philadelphia Eagles.
