Welcome Pickups picks up €5.3m in funding to supercharge expansion

Greece: Athens-based travel tech platform Welcome Pickups has raised €5.3 million to “supercharge” its international expansion plans.

Existing investors Market One Capital, Flashpoint Venture Capital and VentureFriends all participated in the latest round

Welcome Pickups says that it aims to “redefine” the way in which people travel by creating personalised and wholesome travel experiences from the moment they start planning their trip until the moment they return home. The startup provides transfer services from airports to travellers’ accommodations [including short-term rentals and hotels], as well as essential products, pre-ordered tickets to popular attractions, itineraries, and tips and tailor-made experiences led by locals.

As social media plays an increasingly integral role in our lives and spending choices, companies are looking to adopt tech-based approaches to create holistic, hyper-personalised trips and experiences to cater to evolving consumer demands and expectations. Welcome Pickups utilises its technology to streamline and enhance processes across the business, resulting in an eight times drop in human touch per booking, according to the startup.

Following the pandemic, the company claims to have been profitable for the last 18 months, culminating in a growth rate this year of 50 per cent. Its fresh capital raise is set to fast-track the startup’s growth as it targets global leadership in the travel mobility space.

Furthermore in 2022, Welcome Pickups launched in more than 30 new locations, bringing the platform’s total location network to 100 across the world, while serving over one million travellers globally.

A significant chunk of the investment will be allocated to doubling Welcome Pickups’ destination network and traveller base.

Welcome Pickups CEO Alex Trimis: “The additional funding will be used to accelerate the company’s geographical reach with a goal to double its destination network, focusing strongly on launching new destinations in North and South America. A portion of the funds will also go to further improving customer experience and developing new products to support the company’s mission of creating a complete, personalised, and inclusive in-destination travel experience for all.”

The latest round takes Welcome Pickups’ total funding raised to date to $12.4 million.
