EUROPE: Sustainable holiday home bookings across Europe’s largest tourism markets have more than doubled since 2020, according to data from Interhome.
The HomeToGo Group-owned holiday home specialist analysed bookings for summer stays across Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, finding that sustainable bookings accounted for 29.5 per cent of all summer reservations in 2025, up from 16.7 per cent in 2020.
Italy recorded the highest proportion of sustainable bookings at 40.1 per cent, followed by Germany (36.1 per cent), Switzerland (35.9 per cent), Spain (29.3 per cent) and France (16.1 per cent).
Interhome said recycling facilities recorded the strongest overall increase in sustainable property features during the five-year period, while electric vehicle charging infrastructure saw notable growth in France and Switzerland. Solar panels recorded the largest gains in Italy and Spain.
Jörg Herrmann, CEO of Interhome, said the company was launching a recurring sustainability booking analysis to track changing travel patterns across Europe’s holiday home sector.
Saskia Weber, director of sustainability at Interhome, said the findings reflected growing investment by homeowners in sustainable property features, including EV charging stations, photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient appliances and water-saving technologies.
Interhome said it assesses properties using a range of sustainability criteria, including renewable energy use, recycling facilities, energy-efficient heating and lighting, water-saving systems and proximity to public transport.
