Romania: The Romanian Government is planning to tighten its grip on illegal short-term rentals listed on platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com in the country.

Romania’s Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism recently published a draft normative act for public debate that aims to better regulate the country’s short-term rental industry. The Ministry is specifically targeting property owners who make money from renting out their apartments or properties on booking platforms but do not have the authorisation to do so and who are failing to pay the relevant taxes.

According to Romania Journal, property owners flouting the rules could soon be liable to fines, while the platforms themselves will also be threatened with financial sanctions if they too promote accommodations that are unclassified.
