Germany: Berlin-based cabin rental startup Raus has raised €3 million in a follow-up financing round.
The round was led by 10X Founders with participation from Shio Capital, Bellevue Holding GmbH, Boscor group, Ennea VC, Speedinvest, NFQ Capital and other angel investors. However, Airbnb co-founder and chief strategy officer, Nathan Blecharczyk, was the headline name investing in Raus for the first time.
Blecharczyk previously invested in German multi-days tours booking platform Tourlane, where Raus co-founder Julian Trautwein used to work, while he also served in various communications roles with Airbnb across Europe. Tourlane’s co-founders, Julian Stiefel and Julian Weselek, are also involved with Raus.
Founded in 2021 by Trautwein, Christopher Eilers and Johann Ahlers, Raus rents out tiny houses to city dwellers and builds each hut or home itself before delivering them to land owned by farmers. Described as being “self-sufficient”, the cabins run on solar power and have composting toilets and fresh water tanks.
Landowners either receive a share of the revenue, or Raus leases the space. Should landowners wish to carry out cleaning and the purchase of groceries, they would receive additional money.
Since officially opening its first units in Brandenburg last October, the startup has expanded to offer more than 20 cabins around major cities such as Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden. According to Raus, more than 2,000 guests have stayed in its cabins since last year’s launch, paying at least €140 per night for a two-night minimum stay.
Raus plans to use its latest investment to expand its services, having recently unveiled Raus Lodge, a larger structure built specifically for families, groups and corporates seeking accommodation for up to 12 people. In addition, the startup is launching upsell options for guests, including local food packages and event packages such as alpaca hikes, guided stargazing tours and farm visits.
Trautwein said: “It is fantastic that we were able to attract such first-class investors to Raus again and that our existing investors have once more increased their commitment. With Raus, we want to create a unique experience platform and bring people back to nature on a regular basis.
“The new financing will help us to expand further and accelerate the development of our platform for nature immersion at the same time. We are proud to promote environmentally conscious, local tourism that benefits the economies on site while helping agricultural businesses to put their unused land to good use, generating significant additional income,” he added.
Felix Haas, partner at 10X Founders, said: “We are impressed with Raus’ strategy, performance and consistent expansion. In a short period of time, the team has managed to shape a true love brand, which is confirmed by the consistently high occupancy rates and an engaged social community.
“Demand is clearly shifting away from traditional, standardised stays to extraordinary experiences and Raus offers a new, sustainable concept with a positive impact,” he added.
