Worldwide: Boutique advisory firm AJL Atelier has unveiled its 2024 short-term rental industry landscape, mapping out more than 450 of the most important companies in the industry, including property management companies, technology and service providers.
The company publishes its short-term rental landscape annually to provide industry leaders with up-to-date technology providers that support all corners of the diverse STR market.
At a time when the short-term rental industry is as fragmented as it is, the landscape of technology providers is increasingly complex. Each of the categories represents a key component of operating a successful STR business and the options available to creating the optimal technology stack for a business.
AJL Atelier aims to help vacation rental companies save money, time and resources thanks to better technology, and ongoing testing and reviews of the latest solutions. The firm has put what it believes are the best technology solutions for short-term rentals on one page for the industry to see and benefit from.
The landscape project originally began as an initiative to visualise a fragmented, yet rapidly evolving and growing industry. Upon feedback from industry leaders, the landscape has evolved and is now titled the ‘STR industry landscape‘ to encompass the industry beyond technology.
Among the top 20 property managers that are the customer facing side of the industry and the first line in making the industry the choice of consumers beyond hotels and other accommodations are: Forge Holiday Group; Awaze; Interhome Group; Vacasa; VTrips; numa; Happy.Rentals; Sonder; Houst; limehome; Travel Chapter; COCOONR; Hosting Power Lomarengas; and more.
Simon Lehmann, founder and CEO of AJL Atelier, said: “We’ve added the top 20 property managers to our STR industry landscape because they are on the front lines with the guest.”
With the lines between short-term rentals and hotels continuing to blur, property management system [PMS] vendors have recognised the dynamic and have been quick to provide the flexibility of service on both sides of the coin.
According to AJL Atelier’s findings, the PMS category is the most competitive with 150+ providers, while the Guest Experience category has shown the fastest growth with new providers and solutions that streamline communications and enhance the guest stay.
Over 400 providers clustered in 22 sub-categories summarise the best short-term rental technology, and AJL Atelier says that it maintains active links with a technology database of 150-plus providers.
AJL Atelier published its first vacation rental technology landscape in partnership with growth capital firm PeakSpan Capital a year ago, detailing the major players in the short-term rental space. As the short-term rental landscape and industry have evolved, AJL Atelier has expanded its team to add more critical thought leaders in order to drive the growth and professionalisation of the short-term rental industry.
Recent hires include: Travis Callahan, now president of AJL Atelier; Alberto Broggi, consultant; and Hansueli Wyss, VP of business development.
