Channel 4 commissions holiday home makeover show

UK: Channel 4 has commissioned production company IWC to produce a new show centring on holiday homes.

Hire My Home will follow a pair of interior designers as they renovate and revitalise rentals across the UK.

Jo Street, head of daytime production for Channel 4 and head of Hub Glasgow, commissioned the series, which will be distributed globally by Banijay Rights. IWC is best known for house hunting programme Location, Location, Location, but it has also produced a variety of other shows focusing on travel and lifestyle.

The growth of vacation homes and Airbnb has led to the production of shows focusing on the short-term rental market around the globe. Australian show Instant Hotel gained attention when its second season premiered on Netflix, and the Canadian branch of broadcaster HGTV commissioned host Scott McGillivray to produce renovation show Scott’s Vacation House Rules.

Anna Campbell-Jones, from Scotland’s Home of the Year, and London-based art director and stylist, Zeena Shah, will each be assigned a “bland” rental property in the same part of the UK and given a particular budget. The two will then be tasked with transforming the property, drawing on the culture of the surrounding area for inspiration.

Gerard Costello, executive producer at IWC told Televisual: “Letting our designers loose on some of the UK’s holiday lets is a great way to see some exciting and characterful transformations. This format will not only give Channel 4 viewers great inspiration for their next staycation, it will be full of creative ideas for improvements they can make in their own homes.”

Rentals will then be judged by 100 select viewers through the Hire My Home app. The judges will sort through the listings, which feature photographs and price points, by swiping, determining whether they would or would not book the rental.
