Cornwall retains position as UK’s favourite staycation destination

UK: Property agency Spot Blue International Property has revealed why Cornwall has maintained its position as the UKโ€™s favourite staycation destination.

The countyโ€™s popularity has been attributed in large part to the expanding domestic holiday home market, the uncertainty over Brexit and improving transport links to the South West of England.

In a survey, a leading high street bank found that 31 per cent of British โ€˜staycationersโ€™ planned to visit Cornwall this year. More than half of those surveyed [52 per cent] said they planned to holiday in the UK in the next 12 months and 31 per cent revealed they would spend more time in the UK than in previous years.

According to HomeAway, 66 per cent of British people enjoyed a staycation last year, representing a ten per cent increase on 2017.

Cornish tourism is also reaping the benefits from improved air transport links, for example the county is home to the UKโ€™s fastest-growing airport at Cornwall Airport Newquay. In the 2018-19 financial year, some 461,000 passengers passed through it.

Cornwall is also attracting a growing number of foreign tourists, with holidaymakers from Germany becoming one of the countyโ€™s strongest growth markets from abroad. German airline Eurowings now connects Cornwall with Berlin, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt Hahn airports.
