Global: Property management software provider Hospitable collected and remitted more than $1.7 million in lodging taxes for short-term rental bookings across the US and Australia during August.
The figure covers direct bookings, Vrbo reservations and guest upsells for which Hospitable acted as merchant of record.
As merchant of record, Hospitable processes guest payments and assumes responsibility for calculating and remitting applicable lodging taxes in supported jurisdictions.
The milestone follows the company’s expansion of its automated lodging tax service across all 50 US states in June. The service handles registration, calculation, filing and remittance across relevant state and local tax authorities.
Lodging tax requirements can differ between states, counties and municipalities, creating several registration and reporting obligations for property managers operating across multiple markets.
Hospitable said the service is intended to support property managers as they expand their portfolios and accept more reservations outside the major online travel agencies.
Pierre-Camille Hamana, founder and CEO of Hospitable, said: “We took the view that compliance is infrastructure, not a service you bolt on later.”
The $1.7 million represents taxes collected from guests and passed to the relevant authorities, rather than revenue earned by Hospitable.
