Spain: The Region of Murcia has partnered with Airbnb to enforce stricter regulations on short-term rentals, requiring all listings to display a valid tourist registration number.

The move is part of a wider effort to combat illegal rentals and improve oversight of the sector in line with European regulations.

Under the new system, properties without a valid registration number will no longer be allowed to advertise on Airbnb. Hosts must now submit their registration details and agree to share their information with local authorities, enabling a faster inspection process and helping officials crack down on unlicensed rentals.

To support hosts during the transition, Airbnb has announced plans to launch an educational campaign, ensuring property owners understand the new requirements. This initiative aligns with the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia’s broader strategy to regulate accommodation standards and introduce a Digital Single Window for streamlined data exchange and compliance tracking.

Juan Francisco MartĂnez, director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia, called the collaboration a step forward in regulating tourism.

Murcia’s crackdown mirrors similar efforts across Spain. Ibiza’s council leader, Vicent Marí, recently signed an agreement with Airbnb to tackle illegal holiday rentals in the Balearic Islands, strengthening local authorities’ ability to monitor and enforce STR regulations.

With stricter oversight now in place, Murcia is joining other Spanish regions in pushing for greater accountability in short-term rentals, aligning with Europe’s evolving regulatory landscape for the sector.
