Holidu buys Ferienwohnungen.de to grow portal offering

Germany: Vacation rental booking portal Holidu has announced that it has acquired Ferienwohnungen.de, a portal for booking holiday accommodation in Germany and one of the last large independent brands in the DACH [Germany, Austria, Switzerland] market.

Founded in 1998, Ferienwohnungen.de has offered around 7,000 apartments and holiday homes through its platform and attracted more than 450,000 website visitors each month. However, until now, most of the properties could only be booked on request, but the acquisition will enable hosts to use Holidu’s software solution and local personal service, including a professional photo shoot.

In addition, Holidu will now offer an expanded range of accommodation, which can now be browsed and booked at the www.ferienwohnungen.de website.

Johannes Siebers, co-founder and CEO of Holidu, said: “With this cooperation, we are taking hosts by the hand and accompanying them on their way to online booking. We offer hosts an even better technological solution and a simplification of many processes, from optimised calendar planning to efficient payment processing.”

Thomas Frost, managing owner at ferienwohnungen.de, says: “We are very happy to have found a partner who offers our guests and hosts the best technology on the market. Together with the Holidu team, we will further expand the reach of the portal. “We’re particularly looking forward to that.”

Co-founded in 2014 by the brothers Johannes and Michael Siebers, Munich-based Holidu announced a brand merger with its subsidiary and host solution, Bookiply, in November.

At the time, Johannes Siebers said that the merger was about “creating a clearer brand structure for our customers and bundling our expertise, services, and products under a standardised brand name”, adding that it “not only simplifies communication with our customers — hosts, guests, destination marketing organisations [DMOs] and partners — but also promotes our brand awareness and accelerates our further growth”.

As a company, Holidu operates a booking portal of the same name for vacation rentals, which bundles millions of offers and has more than 100 million users every year. Under the Holidu brand, the company now also offers its software and service solution for vacation homeowners [formerly Bookiply], which helps them generate more bookings with less effort.

As a result, not only do hosts have access to easy-to-use software, but they also receive personalised support from local travel experts.

The Ferienwohnungen.de office near Flensburg in northern Germany will remain and become part of the Holidu company with more than 500 employees across Europe.

Siebers has hinted that Holidu is considering further “strategic” acquisitions, suggesting that they are “a strong growth driver for us on the host and guest side, giving us a boost to the growth of directly managed accommodation”.

Holidu previously bought holiday rental platform Spain-Holiday in October 2021, and the company has so far raised more than €200 million to date.
