ASSC partners with Sustonica to promote responsible tourism

Scotland: The Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers [ASSC], representing thousands of self-catering operators in Scotland, and sustainability certification provider Sustonica have announced a strategic partnership to promote responsible tourism in Scotland’s self-catering community.

The collaboration marks the first time that a Scottish short-term rental association has endorsed a global sustainability certification label, emphasising the growing importance of sustainable and responsible tourism in the short-term rental sector.

Through the partnership, the ASSC wants to demonstrate its commitment to promoting sustainable practices among its members. By recommending the Sustonica sustainability label, ASSC is encouraging property owners and managers within its network to adopt measures that reduce environmental impact and strengthen the local short-term tourism sector.

Fiona Campbell, chief executive of the ASSC, said: “Supporting our members on their sustainability journey is a big part of our commitment to promoting responsible tourism, and partnering with Sustonica, an innovative, global, user friendly platform will help us achieve our mission. This collaboration allows us to offer our members a tangible way to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and to their guests, setting a new standard in the industry.”

Vanessa de Souza Lage, co-founder and CEO of Sustonica, and the winner of the Innovator / Disruptor award at the 2024 Shortyz Awards, said: “Partnering with the ASSC is a major step in showcasing Scotlandโ€™s wonderful short-term rental communityโ€™s commitment to responsible tourism and respect for its heritage and environment.

“We are thrilled to join forces with ASSC. This partnership is a significant step towards mainstreaming sustainable and responsible tourism practices in Scotland.

“Together, we can strengthen our industry and make a real difference in reducing the environmental and social footprint of short-term rentals,” she added.

The Sustonica program and badge offers recognition of the responsible tourism practices and steps taken by short-term rental owners, thus offering transparency and appealing to the growing numbers of eco-conscious travellers. The program checks energy efficiency, waste reduction and water conservation, promoting the destination and minimising the negative impact on the community.

Sustonica officially launched in January of last year, and has since partnered with the likes of Booking.com and The Short Term Accommodation Association Australia [STAAA].
